Monroe City Council

Monroe, WA operates as a mayor-council, non-partisan form of government, with a strong-mayor. Seven Council Members and the Mayor, all representing the community at large, are each elected for staggered four-year terms. The City Council serves as the Legislative Branch, the Mayor as the Executive Branch. The Mayor serves as the City's chief executive and administrative officer who oversees all departments and employees. The Mayor attends and presides over Council meetings but does not vote, except in certain cases to break a tie. Volunteer boards and commissions provide recommendations to the City Council on various topics and issues. 

The City Council adopts the City’s Biennial Budget, establishes law and policy, approves appropriations and contracts, levies taxes, and grants franchises. The City Council also approves its Legislative and Strategic Priorities.

City Council meetings

City Council meetings are held on the second through fourth Tuesdays of each month (unless otherwise cancelled or rescheduled) and are guided by the Council’s Rules of Procedure. Meetings are held in a hybrid format (in-person and virtually.) Meeting agendas, memos, and minutes are available on the Meetings and Agenda portal. Public participation at City Council meetings

Public participation is encouraged at City Council business meetings. Oral public comments are accepted in-person at the beginning of meetings on topics related to City business. Written comments can be emailed or mailed prior to the meeting. For more on participating in City Council meetings or providing comments, select the “Meetings” tab below.

Meetings

  • TIME: 7:00 p.m.
  • DATES: Second through fourth Tuesdays of the month (any meeting falling on a holiday is rescheduled to the next business day (evening) unless otherwise rescheduled or cancelled by Council).
  • LOCATION: Monroe City Hall located at 806 West Main Street, Monroe WA
  • PUBLIC COMMENTS: The City Council accepts oral comments in-person at the beginning of the meeting. Oral comments are limited to three minutes on topics related to City business.  Comments may also be submitted in writing to the City Clerk at cityclerk@monroewa.gov or mailed to City Hall at 806 W Main Street, Monroe WA 98272. Written comments must be received by 4 p.m. the day of the meeting for advanced distribution to City Council. Written comments received at the council meeting will be distributed to council at the council meeting. Pursuant to Council Rules of Procedure, written comments will not be read into the record.  
  • COMMITTEE MEETINGS: City Council Committee Meetings occur prior to the Council Meetings generally starting no earlier than 6:00 p.m. (Go to Council Committees page for more details)
