What year were you elected, and re-elected if applicable, to the City Council?
Geoffrey Thomas has been working for the City of Monroe as Mayor since January 1, 2014. He was re-elected and began a second, 4-year term on January 1, 2018. Before beginning as Mayor, Geoffrey worked as a City Councilmember for the City of Monroe from November 2003 to December 31, 2009, serving one unexpired term and one 4-year term. Geoffrey formerly served as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Monroe and for the City of Olympia.

How long have you lived in Monroe? If you are not a Monroe native, what brought you here?
Geoffrey, his wife Lara, and their two sons Andrew and William have lived in Monroe since 2000. Geoffrey and his family moved to Monroe from Olympia when he and his wife accepted city planning positions at two different cities near Monroe. They choose to move to Monroe because of Monroe’s beautiful parks, wonderful community, affordability, proximity to excellent hiking areas, and the highways that offer accessibility to along US2, SR203, and SR522.
What is your professional background/experience/passion?
Geoffrey has worked for over 25 years of professional experience as a policy and budget analyst, planner, and project manager and over 21 years of concurrent community leadership experience as an elected and appointed official and volunteer. In addition to serving in elected and appointed positions, Geoffrey has served as a church director, scout leader, lacrosse coach, and homeowners’ association president. While earning his degree at the University of California at Davis, Geoffrey worked as a firefighter, landscaper, and student advisor. Geoffrey’s degree is in Environmental Policy, Analysis, and Planning specialized in Water Quality and minored in Russian Language.
Geoffrey has a passion for serving Monroe. He enjoys advocating for our community, leading and empowering teams, public speaking, and working on the many challenging issues facing our community.
What are your hobbies or interests?
Geoffrey enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, and visiting communities around the region.
